There are three main types of mesothelioma – pleural, peritoneal and pericardial – with pleural being the most common. Almost all cases of mesothelioma have asbestos exposure at their core. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they often become lodged in the membranous linings of organs and the chest cavity, eventually leading to abnormal cell division. Once an asbestos fiber has been inhaled, there is no way for the body to clear it naturally, and while it may never present as cancer, the possibility always exists.
