Asbestos Cancer

Frequent contact with asbestos increases the risk that a person may develop an asbestos cancer later in life. Mesothelioma is a form of asbestos caused cancer that is characterized by tumors forming around the vital organs of the body.

There are currently three known forms of mesothelioma, including pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Because these tumors do not manifest until decades after regular exposure to asbestos, doctors generally do not diagnose mesothelioma until the disease is in its later stages.

Asbestos Cancer Types

  • Pleural Mesothelioma: Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleura, which is a thin membrane surrounding the lungs. Plural mesothelioma is often characterized by fluid buildup in the lungs and diminished lung capacity. There are a number of symptoms of pleural mesothelioma, none of which are unique to the disease. These symptoms include sudden weight loss, night sweats, fevers, lumps located under the skin of one's chest, a persistent cough that brings up blood, a non-abating chest pain, and shortness of breath.
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Peritoneal mesothelioma is located in the thin layer of cells around the abdominal cavity, which is called the peritoneum. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma arise after the disease causes fluid to build up between the layers of the peritoneum. Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms include fatigue, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, anemia, abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, fevers and sudden weight loss.
  • Pericardial Mesothelioma: Pericardial mesothelioma is located in the lining of the heart. Symptoms include persistent coughing, an irregular heartbeat, fatigue, shortness of breath and night sweats.

Asbestos Cancer Treatment

There are a number of treatment options available to mesothelioma patients, particularly in cases where the disease is diagnosed early.

When the disease is diagnosed early, surgery may be an option. During an operation, a surgeon will attempt to identify and remove the cancerous tumors. Palliative surgery may also be used to relieve one's pain and improve quality of life.

For those in a later stage of mesothelioma, chemotherapy can help alleviate symptoms and extend the life span of a patient. Chemotherapy, which actually kills the cancerous cells in one's body, can often be used in conjunction with other treatments such as radiation.
