From the 1930s to the late 1970s, several members of the United States military were exposed to asbestos, but were unaware of the health risks surrounding this lethal mineral. Asbestos was widely used during these decades in the shipbuilding and other repair areas, especially during World War II. This can be attributed to the fact that a large quantity of asbestos could be obtained at a reasonable price, and it had a lot of heat-absorbing, fire-proofing and insulation features. Research has it that over 300 asbestos-based products were being used by the U.S military, especially the Navy.

Veterans who were stationed at shipyards and other repair yards were not aware of the dangers of the toxic substance and hence have suffered the deadly consequences in the form of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancer, decades after the initial exposure to asbestos. This rare form of cancer is characterized by a late latency period cancer, which means mesothelioma can stay dormant in the body for years after its symptoms start surfacing. This critical delay in detecting the disease can significantly hamper the patient's survival rate. The asbestos fibers when inhaled or ingested dangerously stationed themselves in the lining of the lungs, leading to inflammation, irritation and ultimately resulting in the formation of malignant tumors. Statistics reveal that veterans account for a sizable portion of all mesothelioma cases. Due to mesothelioma's extended latency period, World War II veterans have only recently started exhibiting signs of the disease.
In addition to claiming compensation from manufacturing companies by filing a mesothelioma lawsuit, veterans can also apply for disability compensation along with health care coverage through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Mesothelioma patients who think they have developed pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos during their active military service may file an application for claiming veteran benefits from the VA. There are several conditions that must be fulfilled though, before the veteran is liable to claim benefits, including solid evidence that the asbestos exposure occurred while the patient was in active service (not before or after) and a definitive medical document attesting the fact that the cancer is as likely to have been caused by asbestos as any other combination of potential factors. According to the VA, the disability should be a result of or made worse by an illness/injury that was acquired during active service duty, active duty training or inactive duty training.
Veterans wanting to claim their Veterans Affairs health and disability benefits are initially required to apply for enrollment into the veterans' benefits program at their respective regional VA office. It is important to note, however, that there is no guarantee the application will be accepted. In the event that the VA approves the veteran's application, they are automatically entitled to receive Disability Compensation from the VA. The exact amount of coverage and disability compensation awarded is dependent on a number of factors and is determined after approving the application. Upon approval, the veteran is entitled to receive treatment from several medical facilities all across the country.
