Naval veterans are particularly at risk for developing mesothelioma as they were exposed to asbestos onboard ships where asbestos was widely deployed as an insulating material. Indeed the risk of dying of mesothelioma contracted from this asbestos exposure was almost as high as the risk of dying in combat. The mesothelioma death rate among shipbuilders and repair personnel was 14 per 1,000 while the combat death rate was 18 per 1,000.
