School administrators from Parry Sound High School have been visiting classrooms in order to reassure students after protests over the potential health risks of asbestos in the school. Students had been protesting recently after the presence of asbestos was identified at the school following an inspection.
The school’s principal confirmed that students had been informed of the precautions and steps taken by officials to ensure the students’ protection, after a number of classrooms and hallways were closed recently so that the asbestos could be removed.
A number of students protested last month, both on Monday and Tuesday, the 4th and 5th of December. The School principal stated: “The same students were out again on Tuesday. I went out and brought them in and chatted with them. Kids listen. I gave them more information and they went back indoors.”
The students did cause some safety concerns while protesting, which resulted in the police being called out to the protests. The principal added: “One lady said that she was almost rear ended because the person behind her was paying more attention to students with plaques.”
