Officials have announced that the asbestos removal work being carried out at a power plant in Kinston City should be completed in a couple of months. The power plant is in Manning Avenue, and the city manager has confirmed that it should be a couple of months and the work should then be completed.
The asbestos removal is likely to cost the city over $340,000, and work began on the clean up earlier this year in October. The city received a number of bids for the work, with costs ranging from just $340,000 right up to over $1.5 million.
The city manager stated: “Our primary goal has been to get it cleaned up at a price we can afford. Now it is at the point where you can actually get inside.” His assistant has already seen some of the areas of the plant that have been worked on, and he stated: “I went inside and it looks really good. Of course, it’s still not really safe to walk around. There are still things falling apart and a lot of areas with holes you could fall into.”
He added: “Although it will never be open to the public before renovations are done, with the asbestos cleared out we can now take those who might be interested in doing something with the building inside. Before, all we could do was show them pictures.”
