A union official has stated that officials from the Aussie building products manufacturing firm James Hardie paid no heed to warnings or staff concerns relating to asbestos exposure at its plant in Sydney. The company was informed of writing of the dangers, but according to union officials failed to act on the warnings.
David Henry, from the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, carried out an inspection at the site, which has since been shut down, with around one hundred workers suspended on full pay while further investigations are carried out.
According to Henry workers “…had concerns about the asbestos and weren't satisfied with what action or lack of action has been taken by the company.” He added: "The asbestos seems to have been sitting there for a considerable period of time. How long that is could be anyone's guess."
However, a spokesperson for James Hardie claimed to be unaware of any unanswered queries or complaints that had been made by employees at the plant. He stated: "We have sought the professional advice about what areas we may need to take action on. Subject to that advice we'll then move forward with the unions."
