A contract of $280,000 has been awarded by the West Des Moines school board for the removal of asbestos from Valley High School. Work is expected to begin to remove the asbestos around the 22nd of December.
The maintenance supervisor for the district stated that although the bid for the contract was around $100,000 more than had been anticipated, there was actually only one bid for the work to be carried out, and therefore it was awarded despite the additional costs.
Apparently there were other interested contractors, but they did not submit bids because of the time constraints placed on the start and completion of the work. The maintenance supervisor stated: "Because of the time frame on Phase 1, they felt they would be really pushed to complete it. We were kind of disappointed."
Parents have been informed that the risk of the release of asbestos fibers during the removal is low, and therefore students are not at major risk of being exposed.
