A contract for nearly $75,000 has been approved for the abatement of asbestos at the former Community Resources Credit Union building by Lee College officials. This is for part of the second phase of abatement, which is designed to renovate and contain airborne asbestos at this building, which has now been purchased by the college.
The first phase of the abatement project is already complete, and in total the first phase cost just over $107,000, which was $26,000 less than had been expected. The total cost of the project is expected to cost around $411,000.
One college official stated: “The two phases of the abatement will allow us to move into the building safely. It completes the campus and gives us a place for Continuing Education and the workforce.”
In order for the college to start using the building and allowing people into it, the two phases of abatement and construction must be completed, and then must pass inspection. When asked whether the money being spent on the project could be used elsewhere the official stated: “As a public entity, we at this point have to do this next abatement.”
