Sufferers of the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma, and their families have been lobbying in London, outraged at the government’s plans to withdraw an effective treatment that can help to extend the lifespan of sufferers of the cancer as well as to ease the symptoms of the asbestos related disease.
Officials announced plans to withdraw Alimta, the only approved and effective treatment for the cancer, from the market stating that although the drug was effective the cost of treatment for patients could not be justified. However, sufferers of the disease that rely on the drug have been outraged by the plans.
The mass lobby in Westminster, where the Houses of Parliament are located, was supported by unions Amicus and GMB. Many sufferers have already contacted their MPs about the decision, and a number of MPs have been supporting the cause to have the decision reversed.
A spokesperson for the legal company heading up the campaign stated: "This is a chance for every MP in the UK to put their weight behind this campaign. During this lobby they will be able to see first hand how mesothelioma has changed the lives of many hard working people and they will learn how Alimta can help some of these people to have a better quality of life."
