Parents of students at Valley High School in Des Moines have expressed concern over the presence of asbestos in a section of the school, and state that they have been kept in the dark about the removal of the asbestos. Parents say that plans to remove the asbestos are dangerous and that they have not been given information about the asbestos and its removal.
Officials for the school have now revealed that they plan to tear down a section of the building early next year, and that this is the section that has the asbestos in it. However, the asbestos must be removed prior to demolition as it may otherwise pollute the air and result in health problems.
One official stated that the plan had not been kept secret, and said: "It's a highly regulated activity, so we will take steps above and beyond what's required to meet the standards and assure not only our students are safe, but our staff is safe, too."
However, one of the parents of a student that attends the school voiced her own concerns, stating: "It's a surprise, and I think it's dangerous. I think we should have had warning or they should have done it in the summer when nobody was in school."
