Asbestos Inspector Who Accepted Bribes is Sentenced

A former inspector with the DC Department of Health has been sentenced for accepting bribes in relation to relaxing asbestos removal standards at a city dump. Forty-three year old Jeffrey Dewhite Edwards was sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison after being convicted on bribery and extortion charges.

It is alleged that Edwards demanded $10,000 from a company consultant, stating that in return he would relax the standards required for asbestos removal from the dump. The company had been hired by the District to demolish incinerators at the waste transfer facility in Northeast.

After being offered the bribe, the consultant for the company contacted authorities and in 2003 Edwards was arrested. He has now been sentenced to 33 months in prison, although his attorney was seeking a term of supervised probation. The ex-inspector�s attorney stated that the man had lost his job, home, and family as a result of the conviction.
