It has been announced that workers that contracted asbestos related diseases from working in a factory in the UK will now be able to renew their compensation claims. Hundreds of workers will be affected, and these workers contracted asbestos related health problems when working at one of the world’s largest makers of asbestos products, Turner Newall.
Funds already totally 70 million pounds (GBP) have been set up in order to deal with the renewed claims. Lawyers for the plaintiffs have stated that it has been an uphill struggle, but they now hope to get claims settled and sorted out as quickly as possible for the former employees of the factory.
Claims made by the former employees were frozen five years ago, after Federal Mogul, the American parent company of Turner Newall, went into administration. Claimants then had to wait for agreements to be reached between administrators and the insurers of the company.
One lawyer stated: "This is the final hurdle in a five-year battle to compensation. We are talking about ordinary people who went about their day's work without ever realizing that they were being exposed to a substance that could lead to an illness that would prematurely end their life. Sadly, many victims have already died without receiving any kind of compensation. But that does not prevent their estate from pursuing a claim."
