The widow of a victim of asbestos related cancer is to speak out at a conference today, which will be held at a hotel in Antrim, Ireland. The widow, 58 year-old Mary Carlin, is also the former Mayoress of Derry City Council and will be joining a team of health specialists at the conference.
The Mesothelioma Conference is aimed at highlighting all aspects of the asbestos related cancer and educating others. Mary Carling’s husband, Tony, died at the age of 56 in 2002 from the incurable cancer, which stems from exposure to asbestos fibers and debris.
More that 100 people die each year in Ulster from asbestos related illnesses, and Mary said that she hoped the conference would help to educate others. She stated: "As a carer, I want to help people understand what to expect when dealing with this incurable disease."
She added: "Mesothelioma affected my husband very quickly. He was a cyclist and a hill walker. "He didn't drink or smoke and then, suddenly, he could hardly breathe at all. He was in extreme pain during the 11 months before he died and had a morphine-filled syringe driver pinned to him at all times."
