The Environmental Protection Agency has completed a two year project that involved removal of asbestos contaminated soil in a Minneapolis park.
The project lasted for two years and cost nearly $2.5 million, but EPA officials stated that it still took less time and cost less money than had been originally anticipated.
The clean up took place at Gluek Park in Minneapolis, which had been closed since 2003 because of the contamination problems. About 15,000 tonnes of topsoil had to be removed and disposed of as part of the project, and crews had to be careful to ensure that dust did not contaminate other areas. Continual air quality monitoring was also carried out.
One official stated: "We plan to wrap up site work the week of Oct. 16. The cleanup went a little faster and cost quite a bit less than the $3 million budget we projected."
