A Wisconsin company has been fined after being charged with asbestos violations during demolition works. The firm, from Milwaukee, was fined over a quarter of a million dollars for the violation, after it was alleged that asbestos was improperly handled during demolition work at the former Solvay Coke facility.
The costs and damages that the firm was ordered to pay by the judge totalled two hundred and seventy five thousand dollars. The company, Lake States Industrial Services Inc, had been hired to carry out demolition work at the site by Golden Marina Causeway LLC.
The violations took place in 2004, when the company undertook demolition work at the site, which included the demolition of buildings that contained asbestos. A trial in relation to the violations took place in August, and the company was found guilty of these charges.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources described the mishandling of this deadly and carcinogenic material by Lake States as a ‘chronic’ asbestos abatement violation.
