A widow from the United Kingdom has received a substantial amount of compensation after she lost her husband to an asbestos related disease known as mesothelioma. Her late husband, Harold Wood, was exposed to deadly asbestos while working at Vickers Shipyard and for British Rail, and he went on to develop the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma.
Mr. Wood died at the age of 64 in October 2004, having being diagnosed with the cancer just a few months earlier. This is a cancer that has a very long latency period and can lie dormant for several decades before symptoms manifest themselves and a diagnosis can be made.
The amount received by his widow, Sheila Wood, was not disclosed but was said to be substantial. It was reported that Mr. Wood was exposed to asbestos from the age of fifteen. He was not told by his employers that the asbestos dust that he was exposed to could be harmful, according to reports.
Mr. Wood’s son stated: “My dad was never told about the dangers of asbestos and did not know what mesothelioma was when he was diagnosed. He was a fit and healthy man, who worked hard for a living, but this disease took him just four-and-a-half months after he was diagnosed. This money will not replace my dad, but it will help support my mum, who is now adapting to life without her husband.”
