Support Groups Prove Invaluable to Mesothelioma Sufferers

October 8th, 2004

Many sufferers of the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma, have reported that attending support groups sessions helps them to come to terms with the disease and enables them to learn more about the effects and what to expect.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused through exposure to asbestos fibers. The disease can take decades to manifest, hence the majority of cases have only started coming to light over the past decade or so. This means that, as diseases go, this is a relatively new one and most people don’t know that much about it – that’s if they have heard of it at all.

Attending a support group enables newly diagnosed patients to discuss issues and concerns with others in the same situation – people that may have already found out more about the cancer and can pass this knowledge on to newly diagnosed sufferers. Those that have just been diagnosed can details of local support groups through their doctor, lawyer or a local cancer center.

Being informed that you have mesothelioma can come as a bolt from the blue, especially considering that you may not have worked with asbestos for thirty years or more. However, a support group can help you to glean advice from those that are in a similar situation.
