Asbestos May Be Behind Office Building Illnesses

October 6th, 2007

Workers at a building in Indiana are wondering if the asbestos present in their workplace has something to do with employees’ illnesses. Some of the people that work in the building have been diagnosed with cancer, a known result of asbestos exposure.

An office building in Indiana is now being monitored, and a health commissioner has been brought in to review the building, after workers sent a letter to the county regarding the air quality. Some of the employees in the building have been diagnosed with cancer, and it was recently found that asbestos is present in the building. After workers found out about the asbestos, a letter was sent asking for an investigation into whether the cancer cases and asbestos were linked.

Though health officials do not think there is any link between the building’s asbestos and the cases of cancer, the health commissioner is reviewing the request. Asbestos has been known to cause a type of lung cancer called mesothelioma. It was not known if this is the type of cancer the workers have, and other types of cancer have been known to result from asbestos, though mesothelioma is one of the only types that result only from asbestos exposure.
