Many parents have expressed concern after learning that asbestos flooring was removed from a school office by contractors. The parents went to meet officials at Huntington Middle School in order to discuss and express their concerns late last week. The asbestos flooring was removed from a guidance office on the third floor of the school.
A school official stated that the contractors working on the flooring removal had discovered that there was asbestos present during the preparations. However, they then went ahead and carried out the removal later that week, as contracted to do so.
The official went on to state that the flooring removal carried out by the contracted workers was in a closed office, and she added that no students were exposed to particles of asbestos, which are known to cause various health problems including an increased risk of an asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma.
However, concerned parents were angry because no notification was given to students’ parents to let them know that asbestos flooring was going to be removed.
