A busy thoroughfare in Roanoke, Virginia has been close down as an annex is removed in downtown. The roads had to be shut down until hazardous asbestos could be removed the existing buildings.
Downtown Roanoke, Virginia has been a detour for the last month or so as demolition was set to begin on an old annex in the area. The old building is being removed to make way for an addition onto the existing courthouse in the future. But before any of this could happen, the main road through downtown had to be closed and traffic had to be detoured while deadly asbestos was removed from the building. While safety crews and licensed professionals conducted the work, traffic was routed as a precaution while the hazardous substance was removed.
Asbestos is a normally safe substance that was used for insulation purposes in older buildings. Asbestos only poses a threat when it is moved or disturbed, when it can break apart. Asbestos particles can be inhaled into the body and cause a multitude of illnesses. Emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer, have all been linked to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma, which results from asbestos particles being trapped in the lungs, can take years to manifest.
