The professor behind the anti-cancer drug Alimta, which has been approved for use in the treatment of asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma, has won the 2006 Heroes of Chemistry Award recently for his valuable contribution to medicine.
The chemistry professor, 83-year-old Edward Taylor, received the prestigious award from the American Chemical Society. The Society states that the award goes to "chemical innovators whose work has led to the welfare and progress of humanity."
The drug, Alimta, was given FDA approval in 2004, and in addition to being used in the treatment of pleural mesothelioma, which is an asbestos related cancer, it has also been approved for use as a second line treatment for lung cancer.
The drug is now marketed and manufactured by Eli Lilly & Co. However, set royalty fees are paid by the manufacturing giant to Princeton.
