A former plastic molder who used to work in the aerospace plastics industry has won $18.5 million in compensation after developing the deadly asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma. The compensation was awarded by a San Francisco jury earlier this week.
David Bakkie was diagnosed with the cancer in 2005. His lawsuit was against a former asbestos mining and manufacturing company, Union Carbide Corporation. The lawsuit alleged that the company was negligent in providing warnings about one of its defective open asbestos products.
A lawyer for Mr. Bakkie stated: “We are very gratified with the jury decision and thankful for their efforts. Mr. Bakkie is a wonderful, deserving man and the jury process didn’t let him down.”
Bakkie worked with aerospace plastics during the 1970s at the Sacramento based American Polytherm. He worked with the defective open asbestos product with regards to which Union Carbide Corporation has been accused of negligence.
