The widow of a man who died after contracting mesothelioma in Japan is to receive 25 million yen by way of compensation. The man was exposed to asbestos while working, and this is a substance that can cause a number of health problems as well as resulting in the asbestos related cancer.
The 61-year-old man worked at A&A Material Corp, at the company’s factory in Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama. He worked here between 1963 and 1968, where he was involved in the production of insulation material that contained asbestos.
Company officials stated that there was no denying the link between the man’s condition and the nature of his work. Mesothelioma is a cancer with a very long latency period, and may lie dormant for decades before manifesting itself. The man was diagnosed with the cancer in 2003.
The firm is also settling a number of other asbestos related claims, including two million yen to a man that has been diagnosed with pleural plaques and used to work for the company.
