A firm that is in charge of the demolition of a factor in Northern Ireland has assured residents that there is no need to worry about exposure to asbestos. An onsite meeting was held this week with attorneys present. The Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive will be overseeing the whole project, with the firm Brickkiln Waste carrying out the actual work on the building.
A representative from the company stated: "At present we are carrying out two asbestos removal processes. The first, the wet strip process, involves the area surrounding the toxic materials being made air tight before the asbestos is saturated to avoid dust particles entering the atmosphere. The operation is extremely time consuming and expensive, however it is being carried out absolutely to HSE specification."
He added: "The second process is the removal of rigid sheeting. This is when large sheets of concrete sheets which contain only small amounts of toxins are simply lifted down in stages and disposed of. The materials have to be taken to England as no disposal unit exists in Northern Ireland at present."
Officials from the company also stated: "There is absolutely no risk. People worked here for 25 years and we are removing the asbestos in an extremely controlled environment. It is fully by the book and we can assure people, there is no danger to people's health."
