St. John the Baptist Parish is to dig up and dispose of asbestos debris that is buried on the site. The asbestos debris was buried at the site by contractors after the demolition of the old Lucy Elementary School earlier this month.
The school was located on the west bank of the parish, and officials for the parish state that there was asbestos contained in the walls of the building. The parish now plans to hire a certified professional in order to remove the debris and ensure that the asbestos is properly disposed of.
Officials working for the environmental services have stated that it is best to leave the asbestos debris where it is, because while it is buried underground it can’t release asbestos fibers, which can cause illness and even deadly disease when ingested or inhaled.
However, officials from the parish have stated that they want to get the job sorted out properly in order to ensure a good job is done. One official stated: "What's going to happen in 10 or 20 years, we don't know. We're going to do it right and make sure the public is not in any type of danger."
