A man from Dallas faces up to 25 years in prison after being convicted on four counts relating to asbestos violations. In addition to violations of the Clean Air Act, Melvin Eugene Riecke II was also convicted of making false statements and mail fraud.
The company that is owned by Melvin Eugene Riecke II used to recycle roof shingles. The mishandling of asbestos, however, stemmed from the way that an asbestos floor tile was handled. A four day trial in federal court resulted in the conviction, which was handed down last week.
Riecke was convicted of failure to comply with deferral work practice standards in relation to the demolition of a building that contained asbestos and the disposal of asbestos debris from the work.
The sentence is now expected to be handed down towards the end of November by Judge Fish. The man could face up to 25 years in prison and fines of around $1.25 million.
