A New York City steamfitter has been disciplined by his employers after he spoke out about the asbestos related contamination within the public schools in the city, reporting on potentially hazardous substances in his work place. Asbestos is a known carcinogenic and can cause an asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma through exposure, as well as a range of other serious health problems.
According to the steamfitter, John Kielbasa, four letters demanding that he meet with his supervisor were sent to him after he made the comments and reported the hazardous substance. He was then accused of taking pictures and posting fliers without permission, as well as disobeying direct orders.
Mr. Kielbasa stated: "It's retaliation. They are catching heat, and they are not happy campers." In May Mr. Kielbasa was forced to give up his duties and sweep floors in a warehouse in Queens. This happened after repeatedly reported asbestos problems in the area's schools.
Mr. Kielbasa is now claiming that his employers have used retaliation to get back at him as a result of him highlighting the problems with the contamination within schools.
