Fly tippers have been dumping potentially lethal waste at an industrial site in Dundee. Some of the waste was found to contain asbestos, a deadly substance that can cause a range of health problems through exposure including mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer.
A property developer has slated the tippers for costing developers and councils a great deal of money in the removal of the waste as well as having disregard for public safety. He stated: “Unfortunately it’s a never-ending problem at Dunsinane and, it has to be said, at other sites in the city as well. The situation really is becoming quite outrageous. There has been all types of building rubble and other rubbish dumped in the area, even asbestos, which has required special measures to remove it from the site.”
The developer, Mr. Linton, has also pointed out the importance of anyone that sees people dumping hazardous waste to report the incident to the relevant authorities. “We do have security on the site, but we can only do so much and when ourselves and the city council are trying to move forward with the redevelopment of the area, having rubbish and rubble dumped in the area does not present a good image to people who might be interested in locating there,” he said.
