The widow of a UK man who died from the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma, is fighting for compensation of up to one hundred and fifty thousand pounds (approximately three hundred thousand dollars) following the death of her husband, Robert Stewart, who was 81 years of age.
His widow, Elizabeth Steward, who is also 81, is suing two companies that she blames for the asbestos exposure and subsequent related death of her late husband. He worked for the companies between 1939 and 1984, where he is said to have been exposed to the deadly substance.
Asbestos is a potentially deadly material that can cause a range of health problems through exposure to airborne dust and fibers. This includes scarring of the lungs, respiratory problems, and the deadly cancer known as mesothelioma, which can affect the heart, lung, or abdominal areas.
The defendants have been accused of negligence, and of failing to warn employees about the dangers of working with asbestos as well as failure to provide protection against exposure to the material.
