A woman from the UK that lost two partners to asbestos related diseases is battling to get compensation after her second partner died from such a disease. Avril Grant lost her first partner, husband Chris Grant, to an asbestos related disease in 2001, and for this she received 40,000 GBP. She is now fighting for compensation after losing her second partner.
Her partner, Les Alford, died this year. Like her first partner, he had worked in environments where he had been exposed to deadly asbestos dust and fibers, and like her first husband went on to develop the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma, which eventually took his life.
Mrs. Grant is the first woman in Britain to have lost two partners to this disease according to reports. Her deceased husband worked as a trainee electrician in his younger years, and it is believed that this is how he became exposed to asbestos. Her latest partner, Mr. Alford, was a truck driver and mechanic and is thought to have been exposed from the brake lining for wheels that he changed.
Avril Grant stated: "Les used to earn good money but now I’m having to live without his wage. I should not have to struggle, living in poverty for the rest of my life because both my partners died of cancer. Forty-thousand pounds sounds like a lot of money but it is not enough to live on for the rest of my life."
