Over 320 sites in Maryland and 14 other states have been identified as potentially containing naturally occurring asbestos. The findings were made by federal geologists, and this has raised concerns as asbestos is a known carcinogen, and can result in a number of health problems including asbestos related cancer, also known as mesothelioma.
Concerns have been raised recently over naturally occurring asbestos after the EPA found levels of asbestos in El Dorado Hills, in an area where children normally play. People are also concerned that any sort of excavation or construction in areas where there is naturally occurring asbestos could result in disturbance of the asbestos and therefore contamination of the area.
One spokesperson spoke of the 22 sites that have been identified in Maryland, stating that there is no immediate danger to residents. He stated: "Maryland does know where the naturally occurring sites are, but they are not monitored, as the material poses no health or safety threat as it is trapped in the rock formation. As long as the rock is not hammered, crushed, mined, broken down, etc., it poses no threat."
