Property Demolition Postponed Due To Asbestos

August 17th, 2005

Two properties on Journal Square that were scheduled for demolition will now not be demolished until later in the year due to a range of problems that have been discovered including asbestos. The two buildings are owned by New York City real estate developer Ralph Tawil Jr. and his family.

A council spokesman representing the area stated that there were a couple of reasons for the delay in demolition. One of the problems raised was that the structures are not very stable, and therefore the demolition could damage other properties close by.

The other problem is that asbestos has been discovered at both of the properties, which has added to the delay. However, officials have stated that the asbestos does not pose any immediate danger to people in the area, as it is not airborne.

The owners of the properties have been asked to submit a detailed demolition plan to city officials by November. The owners have made the decision to demolish the properties rather than repair them because the properties are in such bad shape.
