Sufferers of the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma in the UK have had fresh hope given to them following indications that health services may reverse their decision with regards to an important drug used in the treatment of this illness. The drug referred to is Alimta, which has been shown to extend the life of mesothelioma sufferers even if only by a short time.
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence has refused to approve the drug in the UK due to high costs, stating that the cost of using the drug simply cannot be justified. However, this decision caused outrage amongst sufferers of the cancer, campaign groups, and even some MPs.
According to recent reports, however, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence may turn on its original decision, and may decide to approve use of the drug after all. This news has come as a huge relief to mesothelioma sufferers and their families.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that stems from exposure to airborne asbestos dust and fibers, and can reduce the lifespan of the patient to a matter of months in some cases.
