Asbestos has been found illegally dumped at a northern Warren County landfill, sparking an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency with regards to who is responsible. Around 20,000 square feet of the potentially deadly substance was found at the Fred Madison Landfill.

The asbestos came from the demolition of the old Alvaton Elementary School, where the asbestos had been found in the rafters during the demolition. The Warren County Superintendent stated that proper steps were taken to ensure the safe disposal of the asbestos after it was found.

He stated: "The school board had an agreement including proper disposal of all material with Bluegrass Environmental." However, a spokesperson from Bluegrass stated: "Bluegrass Environmental is not responsible for the dumping of the waste. We followed all EPA regulations on the handling of this material."

Bluegrass claim that another company, Scott Waste Management, was hired to safely haul away the asbestos debris. The EPA will now investigate the matter to determine who was responsible for the dumping of the asbestos at the landfill.
