Widow Gets Over $10 Million For Wrongful Death

A woman that filed a wrongful death lawsuit after losing her husband to an asbestos related disease has been awarded over $10 million. A Newport News Circuit Court jury awarded a total of $10.4 million to Wanda Jones, who had filed the suit against three companies that manufactured asbestos related materials.

Her husband, Buddy Jones, was a former shipyard worker, and he worked with asbestos for around four years. He died of asbestos related cancer at the age of 60, and the compensation was in fact awarded to his widow on the first anniversary of his death.

After being awarded the compensation by the jury Mrs. Jones stated: "It's a mixed day. At least there's been some justice and recognition for what he went through, certainly through no fault of his own. He just went to work and did what he was trained to do on the job."

Her attorney in the case, Robert Hatten, stated: "A lot of these companies now accept responsibility and settle these cases regularly. I hope this verdict will make companies like John Crane change their corporate attitude."
