The demolition of an elementary school has faced delays as a result of the discovery of asbestos. The demolition project at the Jackson Elementary School is also going to cost more than originally anticipated because of the asbestos discovery, as this potentially deadly material will have to be cleaned up before the demolition can go ahead.
Asbestos has been discovered on pipes that run below the school. A number of officials had been sent out to inspect the school before the asbestos was actually discovered according to officials. The removal of the asbestos is likely to cost around seventy thousand dollars, and the demolition project will be delayed by a week.
An official stated that the asbestos piping was underground, and since it was impossible to tell what state it was in at least two certified asbestos technicians would have to be on site.
Asbestos is a deadly material often used with piping in older buildings, and exposure to airborne dust and fibers can result in a range of health problems including a form of cancer known as mesothelioma.
