Free Rubble Is Asbestos Liability

July 18th, 2005

The offer of free rubble at the former UK Kangol site is under investigation by the Environment Agency as it contains asbestos and is potentially dangerous. Builders in Frizington took up the offer of free rubble, which was offered for use in general building, driveways, gardens, etc. Those that have used the rubble have been informed that they will now have to pay to have it removed again.

An officer from the Environment Agency saw a sign advertising the free rubble as he drove past the site. This launched an investigation into the rubble, which was found to contain asbestos, a deadly substance that can result in a number of ill health effects including cancer. The contracts manager at the site, however, states that the rubble was clean, and confirmed that rubble had been taken by various parties.

The Environment Agency has released a hotline number and has urged anyone that knows where any of the rubble might be to call, so that a proper clean up operation can be arranged and the risks to the community and residents can be minimized. The Agency has confirmed that those that have used to rubble must get it removed or properly disposed of.
