Man And Contractor Fined Over Asbestos Violations

July 17th, 2007

A man and a contracting firm have been fined as a result of asbestos violations after the removal of asbestos took place without the proper required licensing.

Galyn Roth is the owner of an office once used by the Department of Environmental Quality in Bend. He was fined fifteen hundred dollars by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, which occupied the building for three decades, for allowing an unlicensed contractor to remove the asbestos.

The contracting company, Spectrum Building and Restoration, which removed the asbestos has also been fined eighteen hundred dollars for removing the asbestos without the proper certification. The company performed the asbestos abatement project at the former DEQ office without the required license.

The man and the contracting company have both been given twenty days to appeal against the fines. Asbestos can cause a range of health problems through exposure, and therefore removal must be carried out by certified specialists.
