A former wharf worker from South Australia is suing authorities after developing cancer relating to exposure to asbestos. The seventy-eight year-old man worked in Port Adelaide on the wharves between 1953 and 1987. The man is suing authorities for exposure to asbestos leading to his cancer.
Lexley Opie was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, and claims that this was a result of exposure to asbestos while loading and unloading vessels, and handling materials in the dockyards. According to his claim the Stevedoring Industry Authority did not provide him with a safe working environment, hence his exposure to asbestos and subsequent cancer.
He is also suing Comcare for damages over his cancer diagnosis, and Comcare is expected to lodge a statement of defense against the claims. Mr Opie filed his asbestos claim in a South Australia District Court.
Asbestos is a substance that can lead to a variety of health related problems, including a form of cancer known as mesothelioma, scarring of the lungs, and respiratory problems.
