The Department of Environmental Protection has recently imposed a variety of fines on individuals and companies for asbestos related violations in the areas of Westfield, Northampton, and Springfield. In a clampdown on asbestos violations a number of individuals have been served with penalties and fines.
Among those receiving fines was Phyllis Cover from Auburndale, who was fined two and a half thousand dollars after an old boiler and pipes had been cut out with a saw and left on the floor of the basement when the new boiler had been fitted. A number of complaints had been made by the tenants in the building.
Another fine was issued to Fleet Environmental Services, which will be paying four thousand dollars for the improper handling and disposal of window glazing material that contained asbestos when company employees were working on a window replacement project.
An eight thousand dollar fine has been issued to the Borges Construction Company from Ludlow, after environmental inspectors found that sections of water piping that contained asbestos had been removed without considering proper working practices in a sewage line replacement project.
