A demolition company from the UK has been fined twenty thousand GBP (around forty thousand dollars) as a result of breach of asbestos regulations during a project that its staff members were working in back in 2004, where it was feared that asbestos had been released into the air.
Asbestos is a known carcinogenic, and those that are exposed to its airborne fibers at high levels or for long periods can suffer a range of health problems such as respiratory problems, scarring of the lungs, and a form of asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma.
The demolition company, Wye Valley Demolition Ltd, is from Hereford in the UK. According to reports the company carried out demolition work on a project in 2004, and during this time an incident occurred that resulted in asbestos dust being released into the air.
The work was being carried out at a former grain store building in the county of Herefordshire. Officials from the company admitted that Wye Valley Demolition had breached the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations.
