The recreation center at an elementary school has had to be closed following the discovery of the deadly carcinogenic material asbestos. The recreational center at the Violetville Elementary School had to be closed after the discovery of asbestos tiling in the area by workers.
After the asbestos tiles had been discovered the area had to be sealed off. It is now going to remain closed until the tiling can be replaced and a clean up and various other works have been carried out. The tiles do not pose a risk to the actual school according to officials, and this will therefore remain open as usual.
Am official for the school stated that although the asbestos tiles were cracked, they were not smashed to the point where asbestos dust and fibers would become airborne, which is where the risk of cancer and other health issues becomes an issue.
He stated: "A lot of old homes and buildings have asbestos in them. It's when they essentially get in a pulverized, almost powder form, that's when they are dangerous. But we don't believe there was any kind of trouble along those lines."
