The family of a woman who died from asbestos related illness following secondary exposure to the known carcinogenic has won a six figure out of court compensation settlement. The woman, Brenda Kitchen from the UK, died from bronchopneumonia.
According to reports her husband was employed by British Rail between 1964 and 1994, and here he was exposed to asbestos on a regular basis through insulation. He would then go home with asbestos dust and fibers on his clothing, which his wife would then clean and wash.
The lawsuit accused BRB, which succeeded British Rail, of negligence in the secondary exposure of Mrs Kitchen to asbestos, which can cause a range of health problems, from lung scarring and respiratory problems to a form of cancer known as mesothelioma.
An out of court settlement was reached by all parties at the end of March this year, although the company initially denied liability for the decadent's exposure to asbestos.
