According to a recent report following analysis of two of the latest asbestos compensation payouts, the amount of money being paid out to asbestos victims in the UK is reaching record levels. In two recent cases the courts awarded nearly nine-hundred and fifty thousand GBP (nearly two million dollars) to one plaintiff, and nearly seventy-five thousand GBP (around one-hundred and fifty thousand dollars) to another.
The two workers, both from the UK, claimed that they worked directly with asbestos, which is a known carcinogenic that can lead to a form of cancer known as mesothelioma, as well as other health problems such as scarring of the lungs and respiratory problems.
According to the plaintiffs in both cases their employers did not take any precautions to protect them against the deadly exposure to asbestos, and one also added that he was not provided with protective equipment or gear in order to carry out his work effectively and in safety.
Every five hours someone in Britain dies from mesothelioma according to the British Lung Foundation. The mesothelioma epidemic is expected to peak in the next decade, and currently around two thousand people a year are being diagnosed with mesothelioma.
