Residents of the Patton Township are concerned about the risk of asbestos exposure after demolition of the former Patton High School was expedited following a collapsed roof that sparked fears that other parts of the building may also collapse.
After the collapse of the roof last week contractors stated that asbestos removal would be more difficult than originally anticipated, and the building had to first be collapsed. The mayor of the township stated: "Asbestos inspections were done on both of these buildings and this upper building was pretty much asbestos-free."
However, the parent of one of residents in the area said: "I'm concerned about the asbestos. I have two little kids and I don't want anything to happen. I don't want anyone to get hurt, so I want somebody to do something about it."
Asbestos is a substance that can cause a range of health problems through airborne exposure to its dust and fibers, including scarring of the lungs, respiratory problems, and even an asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma.
