No Contamination Proven Following Teachers Concerns

May 3rd, 2005

Following concerns that have been raised over pollution with asbestos and other toxic substances at Brien McMahon High School, it is claimed that there is no evidence of pollution and that thorough testing has been carried out. The concerns were expressed by a number of NFT (Norwalk Federation of Teachers) members following extensive renovations to the school.

The building is undergoing a facelift that will create spaces for education and learning, as well as a more luxurious cafeteria. Although the renovations are aimed at improving the school dramatically, some were concerned that the works being carried out were contaminating the air in the meantime. However, it has been stated that over eight hundred air quality tests have been carried out by Brooks Laboratories, and that none of them showed evidence of pollution.

The Vice President of Brooks Laboratories stated: “After examining the tests, the results that we have from Brien McMahon don't raise any red flags for us. Our technicians will continue to monitor the situation through the end of the school year.” The construction worker overseeing the renovation, John Hawley added, “The work is being done in an extremely controlled manner, and it is our goal to make sure that the students and staff experience as little interruption as possible.”

The superintendent of schools, Salvatore Corda, has stated that the concerns raised are being treated very seriously and that steps have been taken to make the areas as safe as possible with regards to possible pollution. He stated, “We are attempting to make sure that nobody's health is compromised.”
