Asbestos at Illinois Beach State Park

April 26th, 2007

Asbestos containing material has surfaced at Illinois Beach State Park, leaving many people that frequent the particular area in which it is located at risk of being exposed to its dust and fibers. Asbestos is a known carcinogenic that can cause cancer as well as other health problems through exposure.

The material has been found near a frequently used pathway, which is often used by dog walkers, hikers, and cyclists. The area has now been sealed off by members of the Dunesland Preservation Society. The asbestos is in the Camp Logan area of the park, which is close to a spot that is popular among fishing enthusiasts.

Jeffrey Camplin, the asbestos expert from the society stated: "I watched kids ride bikes through here and there is a lot of dog walkers, too. There were thousands of pieces picked up last year after they cleaned it twice and we can still find some. They are walking right by it and it's not that hard to find. It's not like you need a microscope."

He added that he wants the area fenced off or the debris to be dug up and shifted. He stated: "When I see stuff like this I can't look the other way. People really shouldn't be in here."
