A former school board employee in New York plead guilty this week over asbestos allegations. The man was released from his position and now faces jail time as well as fines.
Allegations regarding school building asbestos led a New York man to plead guilty this week to two charges against him. The man was accused of falsifying reports as well as lying about removing asbestos from school buildings. The man put those in the buildings in danger of asbestos exposure, and is now facing six years in prison as well as more than $350,000 in fines. The man had been dismissed from his position as Building and Grounds Superintendent for the school district at the time he was accused of the asbestos exposure.
The danger of this case is that the man removed asbestos illegally, putting people in the building, including students, in danger of asbestos exposure. When asbestos is improperly removed or mishandled, the material can break apart and become airborne. Breathing in airborne asbestos has been linked to respiratory diseases like mesothelioma, emphysema and asbestosis. Mesothelioma, a type of deadly lung cancer, is the result of airborne asbestos particles becoming trapped in the lungs after being inhaled.
