Officials have stated that it could cost tens of thousand of dollars to replace asbestos desks at Danbury High School. Recently, holes were drilled into some of the desks and this led to asbestos dust escaping into the air in the vacant classroom.
The area was immediately sealed off as soon as the discovery of asbestos dust was made, and ventilation systems in the room were shut down to eliminate the risk of asbestos dust traveling through and escaping into other parts of the school.
Tests were carried out and a clean up was performed on a day when the school was not open to students. The high school principal stated: "We replace desks on an as-needed basis, but is this something we want to look into now? Yes."
It was reported that replacing the desks could cost a fortune, with each desk costing a thousand dollars to replace. Danbury superintendent stated: "Would we very much like to remove all these things? Yes. We know we have asbestos materials, but they are not hazardous if they are managed and maintained appropriately."
